Mom Arrested For Kids Traveling In Back Of U-Haul

I just saw this story on our local news. The mom and eight or nine children were discovered at a gas station a few miles from my house. It's sad, tragic, and extremely maddening all at same time. What was that mother thinking? I can only imagine the difficult circumstances in her life that would make her feel so desperate that she had to do something like this, but she put all the lives of her kids in danger. I hope they will be safe now, but I can't help but wonder what will happen will to children if/when the mom goes to jail. Will anyone be willing to take in all eight siblings or will they be put into the foster care system and separated? So sad.

Oh my goodness. I wonder what people are thinking when they make decisions like that. It does make you wonder what the whole story is at the same time, but either way - those kids were in danger. Thank goodness they are safe.

That's so sad. You do really wonder where people are in their life that they would do something like that. I hope you all are doing well as you wait for the big date. Happy Birthday to your sweet little girl!

Maybe she was fleeing for her life and the kiddos' lives...maybe she was scared and in a hurry and made a very poor decision, but it was the lesser of two evils. Imagine if an estranged husband, ex boyfriend, sister or brother (some of the kids were nieces/nephews) threatened to come take the kids or kill all of them when they found out she was moving...her first thought was to throw the kids in and GO! My parents drove us around in a station wagon w/ no air and smoking...parents today STILL do this. And in an RV you do not have to be restrained...you can roll around and fly out of those in an accident, too. I am not defending her, just saying I cannot judge b/c none of the media reports tell the entire story...

Jonirc,

Thanks for your comments. I thought of that as a possibility and realize her story may be very tragic. I really do. But I also think finding a safe shelter would have been a better option than driving them 800 miles in the back of a U-haul with loose furniture. At least in a RV the furniture is all attached and can't crush a child when the driver takes a curve too sharp. Oh, and my parents drove us around in the back of a station wagon with no seatbelts too. We used to roll around like watermelons. I'm glad we have ways to keep our children safer these days!

Hey, maybe her kids asked her to ride in the back like mine asked me when we were moving and rented one? LOL. Where is the common sense?
