The Abraham Family’s Journey to Russia to Bring Home Their Daughter

October 1, 2008

There is a game of tag going around blogland; and I'm it!

I got tagged by Rachel - who, BTW, recently adopted the cutest little guy from Izhevsk, RU

Okay, here are Six Random Things About Me:

1. I am the 4th girl in my family and I have a younger brother. My kids will be the exact opposite -- 4 boys and then a girl. My mom had four girls within 6 years before my little brother came along. I had four boys within 6 years and now we are adopting a one year old little girl. I have a greater appreciation for my mom now.

2. I grew up on a farm in rural Robertson County. I worked in our tobacco fields and barns until I left for college. I showed my first heifer, Debera, while in the 4th grade. As luck would have it, Debera was in heat that day. She went crazy and drug me around the show ring, but I held on for dear life. Picture a knobby-knee 9 year old girl leaning back on the heals of her cowgirl boots while hanging onto the end of a halter rope like a water skier being pulled around the lake by a boat (a.k.a. a crazy cow) driving in circles. When she would stop, I'd whip out my curling comb and fix her hair. Debera placed dead last, but I won a showmanship award. I continued to show steers throughout high school.

3. Growing up I had a white horse named Silver who (for the most part) thought he was one of the cows. I rode him bareback every chance I got. He would rear up when I'd shouted "Hi Ho Silver!" Corny, I know. :0)

3. I met my husband Martin while playing in a sand Volley Ball league at Hooters. We played Volley Ball together for five years up until I was about six months pregnant with Preston. The best sand courts were outside at the Hooters in Nashville. I would never go inside - not even to use the bathroom. You should see the looks I get when someone asks where we met!

4. I am a neat-nick -- in my head. In reality, my house is rarely clean and my laundry is never finished. I've come to terms with that. Our friends know they are welcome to come to our house at any time. Sometimes they enter at their own risk! Sometimes when a friend wants to go in the playroom or the office, we offer to tie a rope around them in case they need help finding their way back. I've been known to pay our boys' friends to clean our playroom or help with laundry. Hey, whatever works! Right?

5. I am terrible at Checkers. Really bad. My grandmother used to beat me as a child. Now, my four year old can beat me (well, almost). Other strategy games are fine. There's just something about Checkers that I don't get. [**Edited to clarify that Granny did not actually BEAT me, she just won our checker matches.]

6. My personal motto has always been "better to ask forgiveness than permission". This is not what I want my kids to do -- at least not while they are still living under my roof!

Bonus: I am a total night owl, but most of you probably already knew that from the comments I leave at 2:00 a.m-ish.

Now I need to tag 6 people. Since a lot of us follow the same blogs, this is hard. But here goes... I'm going to tag the following people:

Amy - who just got back from vacation and needs one more thing to do!
Jen - who just became the mother of a sweet baby girl and is soooo close to bringing her home!
Tammy - who will be traveling to Kemerovo soon!
April - who needs a brief respite from gathering more paperwork for court!
Lavonne - who is patiently waiting for "the call" and I love the title of her blog!
Kim - who recently moved to TN and started adoption number three in Russia!

If I have tagged you, here are the rules!
1. Link to the person that tagged you.
2. Post the rules on the blog.
3. Write six random facts about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post.
5. Let each person know they have been tagged.
6. Let the taggers know when your entry is up.

Have Fun!

Farm girl, huh? I love the Gene Autry album for kids. Even though I can't claim to be a cowgirl of any kind I feel I have an in with that crowd since my grandparents were Alaskan homesteaders in the late 30's and before that Colorado rancher's kids. I don't think the horse thing was corny. Sounds totally like something I would come up with. ;)

#2 absolutely had me laughing out loud at my desk at work. I know I should be working, but I coukdn't resist and I'm glad I didn't! Oh - and my house is never spotless either and I pay family members (neices) to clean on occassion also!

I just laughed out loud at your "edited to add" comment about your grandmother! :-) I'm horrible at checkers too. And tic tack toe for that matter! :-)

I did it! Thanks for the tag, that was fun. :)

I love the "ask forgiveness motto." I had never heard it until we moved here and three people have said that to us in regards to our house.
